William Thackeray and Margaret Brown, his wife, were pioneer settlers of Lot 8, Con 1 Alnwick Twp, Ontario in 1835. They were probably one of the first if not the first settlers in Alnwick. They donated land to the Methodist Church for a church and cemetery in 1865. The cemetery was already in use, probably from prior to 1840, as a daughter, Hannah, died before 1840 and a son, Brown, died in 1842. Other relatives and neighbors were also buried there. The oldest known gravestone was that of Jane Shearwin who died 28 Nov 1855 age 13. The Wesleyan Methodist church was built in 1866 by a cousin, John Turner. To legalize matters, the property was sold to the church in 1869. As late as 1940's, the church and cemetery were known as "Thackeray's". Both were gradually changed to Centenary.
