It replaced the Old Burying Ground at Barrington Street and Spring Garden Road in Aug 1844 although it was established a bit earlier. It acted as a Municipal cemetery, open to all, although early Blacks were segregated. Southern Confederate sailors, Second World War Norwegian, Dutch & British sailors are buried here. Many noted politicians, among them Robert Stanfield and Joseph Howe, two Fathers of Confederation (William Henry & Jonathan McCully), and powerful merchants and industrialists, including the inventor of kerosene, Abraham Gesner, the novelist Hugh Maclennan, the inventor of the modern skate, John Forbes.
