Greenwood Cemetery is a small public cemetery that is located in the township of Clute on the south east corner of concession 6 also known as Riverview Road and the Frederickhouse Road. The cemetery is on a section of donated land that belonged to the Metcalf family farm and was set aside for the purpose of burial by the Metcalf family in the 1930?s.

The Metcalf family suffered the loss of two young children during the depression years and set aside this section of their farm lot as a cemetery ground in which their children were the first to be buried.

The cemetery was used by the first inhabitants of the area when north-eastern Ontario was being opened up and it continues to be used to this present day.

The original settlers where responsible for the interment of their own and the first graves were dug by hand. Many of the graves were without markers reflecting the poverty of the first families who settled here who tried to make a living in the harsh northern Ontario bush.

During the 1980?s the cemetery fell into disuse and became over-grown with brush. The new residents in the area joined together during the 1990?s and slowly care was given to the cemetery grounds. Many volunteer hours have gone into the restoration of the grounds and new fences were installed during the 2000?s.

The cemetery continues to be used today and anyone wishing information may contact the Secretary of the Cemetery Board regarding internment.
