Mr. William Cummings, the first occupant owner of Lot 12, received title on December 18, 1831. He donated the South West corner for a school and cemetery.
The Cemetery continued in use until about 1896, when the Midhurst Union Cemetery was established.
There are no records available regarding the Pioneer Cemetery except the inscriptions on the tombstones.
This Cemetery drifted into a neglected condition over the years. An occasional community bee was called to cut the weeds and brush. During one of these work bees, some trees were planted.
The Ontario Cemetery Act places some responsibility on the Municipality for care, like fencing.
In 1979, the Midhurst Historical Society started some restoration work.
A local citizen established at $2000.00 trust fund for continuing care. This fund is administered by the Township of Vespra. The Midhurst Historical Society, the Vespra Horticultural Society, and a number of concerned citizens applied for some of this fund in 1979. With this money twenty-four different varieties of lilacs, the floral ___ of Vespra Township, were purchased. A bee was organized by the Societies, and with the help of some school children, the lilacs were planted on May 19, 1979. This co-operative endeavour transferred an eyesore into a place of interest and beauty. Adjacent properties were increased in value as a result.
In this small way, ___ ____ the contribution the Pioneers have ___. [Final paragraph mostly illegible].
